After a weeklong trial, Louise Brown was awarded $2.4 million for an injury sustained during an endoscopic procedure at Eastern Maine Medical Center. Represented by Taylor Asen and Trevor Savage, Brown argued she had developed Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (“CRPS”). EMMC acknowledged negligence but argued the injuries were minor.

The jury awarded Brown $1.4 million for future care and $1 million for pain, suffering, and emotional distress. “The jury sent a clear signal that they believed Louise Brown,” said Taylor Asen.

A Frenchville woman, Louise Brown, was awarded $2.4 million after an error during a routine procedure at a Bangor hospital in 2019 led to lasting injuries to her left arm. The jury found Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center responsible for the injury and awarded damages after deliberations.

During the trial, evidence was presented showing the severity of Brown’s injuries. Her left arm, badly bruised and mottled with purple bruises, has started to atrophy and is a darker color than her uninjured arm. Brown, 67, experiences constant pain, making daily tasks difficult. She was diagnosed with complex regional pain syndrome, a type of chronic nerve pain.

Despite the hospital’s acknowledgment of responsibility, they disputed the extent of Brown’s pain and suffering. They argued for significantly lower damages, emphasizing the challenge of quantifying physical and emotional damages.

Taylor Asen countered, highlighting the ongoing nature of Brown’s pain and the efforts to discredit her testimony, including surveillance footage showing limited use of her left arm.
