Final Report is Released in Maine’s Deadliest Mass Shooting in Lewiston
Further information has been released regarding Maine’s deadliest mass shooting that occurred at a bowling alley in Lewiston in 2023. The gunman, Robert Card, killed 18 people and then took his own life; reportedly, he was struggling with his mental health.
Information has been released that the U.S. Army may bear some responsibility for the status of Card’s mental health, and a final report has been given regarding the incident that transpired on October 25, 2023.
A Breakdown of the Final Report
A central point that the final report brought up was that the people in charge of Card’s Army Reserve unit did nothing to decrease his threat to the public. During a training mission, Reserve leaders described Card as acting aggressively and sent him for an evaluation, where he spent two weeks in psychiatric care. Following his release, the commission says that leaders were not there for Card throughout the process and did not do enough to monitor him following the time spent in the hospital.
Additionally, Card’s family had concerns about the growing paranoia and access to guns his occupation gave him. Leaders did not listen to recommendations to remove weapons from his home and to take precautionary measures regarding Card’s mental state. Since Card had not committed any crimes, the state of Maine allowed the weapons to remain in his possession and claimed that his threat to the public was blown out of proportion.
Next Steps Following the Final Report
After reading the report, the attorneys of the victims’ families and the survivors held a press conference. It is apparent that the fight for justice is not over, and lawyers are expecting to begin the civil lawsuit process for their clients.
Accountability is the number one priority in this case. With gun restrictions tightening the year prior, legislation changes and policy re-evaluations will be up to current elected leaders.
